I have a question for you!

Hello Division 5 students,

I am beginning to plan my son's Matthew's birthday party.   He is inviting 12 children to his party and I need to figure out how many pizzas I need to order.   A large pizza has 8 slices.   I would like to buy enough large pizzas so that each child can have 3 slices.   How many pizzas do I need to order to have enough slices for all the children?

Can you help me?   Please write your answers in the comment section.

Thanks for your help,   Mrs. Barker :)

  1. So first of all you have to figure out how many pieces of pizza we need in total for 12 people providing that each person would have 3 slices, so 3 times 12= 36 We have to find out how many whole pizzas should be enough for 12 children. 36 divide 8=4 2/8. 4 2/8 is bigger then 4, therefore I have to buy 5 whole pizzas to feed all my guests, there will be some left over.

  2. Sarah, I am so pleased you explained your answer! Like I always say I am happy you got the answer but the most important part is being able to tell me how you got the answer! Thanks for responding, Mrs. Barker

  4. In Matthew's birthday, there are 12 kids, then you said "we need to find out the answer" So, what I did was, I made 12 circles. Then I added 3 in each circle, what I got was 36. After that, I doubled checked by multiplying by 3's. 3 times 12 equals 36. And that's how I got my answer. 3 1/2.

    1. Rachellyne - You have displayed some great thinking. The only problem is that I am not allowed to order half of a pizza. What do you recommend?

    2. So I read Sarah's answer, and I tried it. Since you can't order half of a pizza. I recommend you to buy 4 pizzas for the 12 kids. There will be a few leftovers for you. :) Sincerly, Rachellyne.

    3. Rachellyne,

Can you check your answer again. Draw 3 and a half pizzas and see how many slices that gives you. Each large pizza has 8 slices. Let me know if you have enough to feed 3 pieces to each of the 12 kids.

      Thanks, Mrs. Barker

You can buy 5 boxes of large pizzas the kids can have 3 each pizzas including Matthew so you can have 1 extra slice leftover 5 boxes (8 slices) so 40 divided by 4 equal 13.1 Sincerly , Rachellyne BTW this is the last comment.XD

    1. Vincent,
You are correct. I think I will need 5 pizzas. I am curious what steps you took after you figured out you needed 36 slices. How did you determine that 36 slices would require 5 pizzas?

      Thanks, Mrs. Barker

    1. Using a calculator is another strategy. I am glad you tried this. Amos, how did you know which numbers to enter into the calculator and what operations to use. Did you multiply, add, subtract, or divide? Would you mind sharing how you found the answer with me?

      Thanks, Mrs. Barker

first 3x6 is 36 and each large pizza had 8 slices so i thought each child ate 3 so i calculated i tried 4x8 but it was to small so and then i tried 5x8 =40 that is enough

    1. Melissa, this way works too. You do not need to write your name. You can add it in the comment as you did above. Have you had a chance to try to discover how many pizzas I need to order?

      Thanks, Mrs. Barker

    1. Thanks for working on this Chelsea. So you have figured out that I need 36 slices of pizza. If each large pizza has 8 slices, can you figure out how many pizzas I will need to order.

      Thanks, Mrs. Barker

    1. Hi Lucy,

I agree that I will need 5 pizzas but I am unsure what you mean when you wrote that altogether there is 63 slices. Can you explain this for me?

      Thanks, Mrs. Barker

    2. I put the wrong number 63,it should be 36.
If you add your self your husband and your daughter
and Mattew and 12 childeren you will need 6 large
      pizzas.

  12. 4 1/2 but since you can't have 1/2 5 boxes will do.

I USE MULTIPLICATION TO ANSWER THE QUESTION . I THINK THE ANSWER IS YOU NEED TO ORDER 5 LARGE PIECES TO FEED 12 CHILDREN.

  14. Allan,
Thank you for working out the answer for me. Did you use any other operations other than multiplication to discover the answer. Did you subtract, add, or divide?

It is getting late, are you going to bed soon?

  15. I don't agree with any of them im not sure if im right but I think you guys forgot to include the pizza for Matthew. The way I did it was like this:There were 13 people I tried 8x4 at first but it equeled 32 so I tried 8x5 which equeled 40 so I think they only have 1 leftover By: Steven

    1. Steven,

WOW!!! I completely forgot about Matthew. You have really been thinking critically. I am so impressed! Thank you for solving the problem Steven. I also forgot to add that Scott, Megan and I will also be there. Scott and I can eat 3 pieces each and Megan only eats 1 piece. Would 5 pizzas be enough to include the rest of the family?

      Mrs. Barker

    2. Mrs.Barker , You could have 6 pizzas and then you could have 2 slices that are leftover because last time i suggested 5 and 1 leftover for Megan but I forgot you and Mr.Barker so thank you for rememberng that Mrs.Barker! By Rachellyne

Hi Mrs Barker it is a great on line game for us . I like it. So now I think you invited 12 kids and each one need 3 slices then 12 times 3 equal 36 . And your family has 4 person then 4 times 3 equal 12. So 36 plus 12 equal 48 . Now 1 large pizza has 8 slices .
48 divided 8 equal 6 so I think you need to order 6 large pizzas for your son's birthday party.

You did a great job contributing answers. I will order 6 pizzas. Thank you for all your help!
