I must apologize for the delay in my posting of the iMovie I showed on my last week of school. I hope your last week was good. I was away with my family and promised them that I would not do any homework while on vacation. The day after I returned I was at UBC in a one week long class.

But I really want each of you to know that every time our view the video, I smile at the learning journey we took together. Although I was only with you half of the week, I enjoyed every day! You are all brilliant and you taught both me and Mrs. Robson so much!

Have a wonderful summer! Keep checking the blog, as I just may have a math problem that I need your assistance with.

Take Care, Mrs. Barker
Here is the link to the video... Sorry - I had some difficulties embedding it within this post.
They had a lot of fun working with the clock partners to rotate through stations.
This group measured the back table with different sized play cars...
This lead to an interesting discussion! I asked them to describe what
they discovered. It didn't seem to concern them that some of the play cars
they used were different lengths... some much longer than others. I asked
if this made a difference in their results... they agreed that it did but were
unsure how to measure the long length of the table using units of like size
since they did not have enough cars of equal length ~ one student showed
the others how to line up a car at the edge of the table, make a mark, and
either add a car of similar size or move the previous car to the beginning
of the mark - aligning the car(s) in a straight line without overlapping
gaps ~ an "ah-ha" moment!

Sam, the library mouse, lives in the walls of the library. He enjoys reading the many books and one day decides to write a few stories of his own. He hides them on the shelves of the library. The next day some children find his books and wonder who the author is.

Inspired by Sam, the library mouse, each student in the class wrote their own mini-books based on self-selected topics. On Wednesday during library, the students excitedly hid their books amongst the other books in the library. We can't wait to hear what other students have to say when they discover our little books.

This past week I read Library Mouse: A World To Explore, also by Daniel Kirk. Through this cute story Sam the library mouse, learns about places around the world through the books in the library and through students 3-D projects that he plays with. After reading and discussing the book, my students came to understand that through reading we can "adventure" to new places in the world.

Next, I had the students look at non-fiction books describing countries around the world. I told them that I wanted them to read about a place that they would like to visit and then pretend that they had travelled there. I then handed each student a recipe/index card and had them write me a postcard telling me about all the interesting things they saw and learned on their adventure.

I have always loved watches and remember the excitement when I walked into a Swatch Watch store for the first time.

The children liked looking at creative designs and bright colours. This led us into a discussion about time. I showed them the chart paper below that had an analog (face) clock and a digital time. Together we discussed what they knew and I wrote their comments down. This was a way of conducting an informal assessment for learning.

I was surprised and pleased with the knowledge the students had. Although no student mentioned 24-hour clock notation, so I believe this will be a new concept for many.
They wrote their own First Nations legends, created blossom pictures, and finished a Curious George study!

Over the course of the week, we watched One Hundred Hungry Ants, written by Elinor J. Pinces on YouTube...

And then I read aloud A Remainder of One, also written by Elinor J. Pinces.

We did a hands on problem solving task. The students were asked to demonstrate all the ways 36 ants could march in equal groups. The sequins were added for a little fun - although some of my mathematicians chose to use markers as they could show their thinking quicker!

After reading the Remainder of One together, we talked through all of the scenarios presented and added mathematical symbols/equations to each page with sticky notes. Next, I asked the students if they could create their own mathematical stories. Below are some examples of a few...
I think what I love best about open ended activities like this one, is how they allow for diversity. Some children wrote about division stories that worked out evenly, others had remainders and one went beyond the task to discuss prime numbers (see the last two pictures). This led to the student and I entering into a discussion about the properties of prime and composite numbers. I wondered how he chose this number and when asked he replied "that he chose the number from our class number line". Running across the front of the classroom is a number line with numbers from 1- 100. Above most of the numbers are coloured circlular dot stickers (a Kim Sutton resource) that show multiples of numbers and as my friend discovered, factors too!Jennifer Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15919502616088044112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301389422441633949.post-15029224900419681022012-05-21T09:33:00.001-07:002012-06-09T16:41:14.798-07:00Demonstrating Knowledge
Lessons taught by Mrs. Robson

Over the past few months in Social Studies, our class has examined the lives of the Northwest Coast First Nations. Through books, videos, artifacts, internet searches, and discussions students investigated what life was like for these people prior to European contact.

The students discovered that these natives were considered well off due to their surroundings. They depended heavily on the cedar trees for many things including clothing, housing, transportation, totem poles, tools, and cooking utensils. They also had more than they needed from the ocean in the way of food. They were hard workers who valued their traditions.

To culminate this study, using performance based assessment, the students were asked to work in cooperative groups to demonstrate their knowledge of what they learned about the Northwest Coast First Nations in two ways.

First they had to become a "family" of the coastal natives and then construct a totem pole which would explain their story. They made animal symbols that symbolized importance to them and then wrote stories to explain how each animal had influenced their life in some way. For example - the beaver often represented a family because it had taught them how to cut down trees and how to build with wood.

Second, the students made murals of native villages to demonstrate their understanding of the natives lived. The students brainstormed all the things that they had learned and then in cooperative groups they transferred that knowledge into pictures. For example - many had wooden longhouses, some with totem pole entrances, wooden cooking boxes with hot rocks from the fire, as well as racks of salmon drying and woven cedar bark mats to sit on. The end results were spectacular and the students loved it!

Once again I need your help! Matthew's birthday party is fast approaching. We sent out 12 invitations and all 12 friends have confirmed that they are able to attend the party. Matthew would like to arrange for a hockey game and needs to make 2 teams.

Some notes:
- Matthew also wants to play on a team.
- Scott will be the refereee and I cannot play as I will be busy making lunch and taking pictures.
- Megan will not be playing as she plans to go to a friends house.

How many players will each team have? Please do NOT just give me an answer. I LOVE to know how you arrived at your answer... what did you do? Why?

This term I have been taking a class on Immigrants and Refugees. Although I have taught many immigrants from Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, and other countries, I never fully understood the challenges these students and their parents faced when they arrived in Canada. Through the many articles I have been reading for my class, discussions, interviews, as well as assignments, I have grown immensely in my understanding and have deep appreciation for everything these families go through .

For one of my assignments, I was asked to find a children's story book that connected to a theme related to immigrants and education. Coincidentally last year, I had purchased a book called The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi. Although I read this book last year to my class, I never planned a lesson with it.

So last week I read the book and taught a lesson. I began by inviting the students to the carpet area were we looked at a "Name Jar" and the examined the cover of the book. We opened the jar and read a few names and then I asked the students to predict what they thought the book was about.

Next I read a few of the beginning pages. We learned the having just arrived from Korea, a little girl named Unhei is anxious about making friends and worried that no one will be able to pronounce her name. The name "Unhei" had been given to her by her mother and grandmother who had gone to a name master to find the perfect name. Her name meant "grace".

On the bus ride to school some children make fun of her name. Later, when she is asked by her teacher what her name is, she responds "Um, I haven't picked on yet". Suprised by this, her classmates bring a glass jar to school and begin filling it with names for Unhei to choose from.
At this point I asked my students, to "step into" Unhei's shoes and share what they thought Unhei might be thinking or feeling. After sharing with the class, they did a little writing.

Then we came back together as a group and continued reading and pausing to share our thoughts, predictions and our own feelings. Many of the students strongly connected to this lesson as they shared with me there Chinese and Japanese names. Some students had keep their traditional names but most of them had chosen new names.

After finishing the story, we discussed our feeling about our names. We then stepped back into "Unhei's shoes" and shared what we might have done if we were in her shoes. Although Unhei kept her name, as a class we also concluded that it is also alright to change your name. We had a wonderful discussion about not only names but the other challenges new immigrants/students face. The students told me a lot about how different their classrooms were in China and elsewhere. I finally learned why so many new immigrant parents ask to take pictures of the classroom. Almost every student remarked how colourful classrooms are in Canada and that their previous classroom were mostly gray. This was an "ah-ha" moment for me. I took it forgranted that all primary classrooms were colourful.

We concluded the lesson using laptops to search the meaning of our names and share our information with friends. It was a great lesson and one that I will definitely do again.

Mrs. Robson and I spoke this weekend about how much we enjoyed your responses to the pizza question. We decided to combine some math, poetry, and reading and writing power to give you another challenge.

For the past month or so we have read many books and used the words in the text or pictures to try to infer things that the author has purposely not said. Sometimes it is a moral, sometimes it what the character might be thinking, sometimes it is a hint about what might happen next and so on.

We would like you to read the poem below and see if you can figure out what the author might be trying to infer.

Please remember blog commenting etiquette. You may disagree with someone but please do it in a kind and respectful manner. As well, be sure to support your opinion with reasons.

Thank you,
Mrs. Robson and Mrs. Barker
'Cause I'm his smartest son,

And I swapped it for two shiny quarters

So far we have learned that light is energy that we can see and there are two types of light: natural (sun, northern lights, lightning, etc.) and artificial (light bulbs, TV, street lamps, etc.). Through various activities we came to understand that light travels in straight lines and behaves in different ways in different materials. Light can be absorbed, reflected, or transmitted depending on whether or not an object is transparent, translucent, or opaque. Talk to your children about these terms and listen to what they are able to tell you. I believe you will be surprised with their knowledge!
This afternoon we capitalized on the beautiful sunshine we had and went outside to examine what colours could be seen in bubbles.
As we observed the bubbles, we could see the colours of the rainbow - RED - ORANGE - YELLOW - GREEN - BLUE - INDIGO - VIOLET (although some scientists do not include indigo). With some explanation, the students were able to understand why we saw rainbows in the bubbles. When the "white light" from the sun strikes the surface of the bubble, it is refracted and the light is split into the various colours of the rainbow. This is the same reason why we see rainbows when we shine a light on the back of a CD.
I am beginning to plan my son's Matthew's birthday party. He is inviting 12 children to his party and I need to figure out how many pizzas I need to order. A large pizza has 8 slices. I would like to buy enough large pizzas so that each child can have 3 slices. How many pizzas do I need to order to have enough slices for all the children?

Can you help me? Please write your answers in the comment section.
Instantly after mentioning the word "chocolate" the students were completely engaged.

I began by reading the Hershey's Milk Chocolate Multiplication Book and followed this up with a Marilyn Burns lesson that I finessed to meet the needs of Division 5.

Next, each student was given four 1 x 1 cm brown squares. They were to pretend that each square represented an individual chocolate. I asked the students to explore how many different ways they could package their chocolates. Since we have already learned about 2-D shapes, the students understood when I told them that they could only make regular shaped polygons, such as a square or rectangle.

Quickly the students were volunteering their answers...

It could be a 1 x 4 - which lead me to explaining that this was called an array. I always remind the students that when we are doing mathematics, we speak the language of mathematicians. We added the word "array" to our Math Word Wall.

Another student then offered that the chocolates could also be packaged as 2 x 2.

Then we had a real "ah-ha" moment when a student asked whether or not a 4 x 1 array would count as a third option, or was it the same as a 1 x 4.

Instead of answering this student, I asked the class if anyone had any thoughts. Someone suggested that since this shape was "congruent" (YES, that was the term used - I did a happy dance!) that it would not count as a third option.

Another student put his fist up in the hang-loose hand signal (which I have used with a clicking sound to teach the commutative principle) and told us that it was true for addition and multiplication. Then together the whole class did the hang-loose motion together. The commutative principle, simply put, states that any factors in a multiplication statement can be switched place, and the product (answer) will remain the same.

Following the class example, the students were put into cooperative groups and given 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 squares of pretend chocolates and challenged to discover how many different ways they could be packaged. The students were very creative in explaining why they felt the 'President' should chose one array over another. We concluded the lesson eating mini-Hershey's chocolate 2-square bars!

At the suggestion of my class, I have sent an email to the Hershey's Company detailing this lesson and how much fun the students had. I think they are hoping for some free samples! ~ as am I.Jennifer Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15919502616088044112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301389422441633949.post-17502713690061826772012-04-26T16:31:00.001-07:002012-04-26T21:02:16.336-07:00Commenting on blogsRecently the students in Division 5 have shown an increased interest in this blog. Several students have begun posting comments. Some of the comments were thoughtful, while others needed some tweaking.

Today in the computer lab, I gave a lesson on how to respond appropriately to blogposts. We went through all of the comments currently on this blog and asked ourselves some questions:

1) Was the comment helpful?

2) Did we learn something from the comment? New information?

3) Was the comment respectful and kind?

4) Does the comment offer a compliment? Does it require a thank you?

5) Was the comment a question that needs a response? Is this comment an invitation to begin a conversation?

6) Had the comment been proofread?

Then we all watched this excellent teaching video created by some students in California. These children explain how others can make quality comments on blogs.

Parents, I recommend you watch this video again with your child and then sitting beside your child, assist them to make a comment on one of the blogposts. As we move forward into the 21st Century our students are going to need to be taught how to become digital citizens of the world. Today Division 5 began the discussion...
I learned so much in the few hours I spent with her. Ms. Novakowski's school is one of the pioneers of technology in our district, with 30 iPads and educators who are knowledgeable and passionate about incorporating technology in purposeful and meaningful ways. Since I am focusing on new literacies in my Graduate studies, I was keen to see how they were using the iPads to enhance curricular areas. I came home with a ton of excellent teaching apps that I quickly downloaded on my personal iPad. Soon I plan to bring my iPad into the classroom and let the students give some of the math apps a try.

As I was perusing the library, several professional hard covered books caught my eye. I was impressed to see that these "real" books had been written and created by classes who had worked collaboratively in the Library with Ms. Novakowski. They had written a Wonder book, a Pete the Cat story, had created a Math Games book which I was most impressed with, and many others!

Buzzing with an abundance of ideas I wanted to try, I knew from experience, that it would be best if I set out a list of my top three. Making a math games book was #1 on my list!

Below is a copy of the Shutterfly book our class created! You can also order a copy of the book from this link but be sure to search for Shutterfly coupon codes online as they almost always have some sort of a deal!

It was Division 5's hope that other students and their families could learn from our math games book! We all benefit when we share great ideas - just as I was able to learn from Ms. Novakowski and share her wonderful teaching strategies and ideas with my students!

For any teachers reading this blog... I had forgotten just what great professional development is offered by visiting and observing outstanding educators. This term in addition to visiting Ms. Novakowski, I visited two other amazing intermediate teachers in Richmond and this experience was equally enriching and helped me continue to learn and grow as a professional. If you have a way to observe another teacher (check with your administrator who may have funds), do what you can to make it happen! You will be glad you did!Jennifer Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15919502616088044112noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301389422441633949.post-47384426358347034322012-04-21T09:36:00.001-07:002012-04-21T09:36:17.139-07:00Learning from ShadowsWe continue to learn about light... yesterday we investigated the properties of light. We conducted an experiment with a flashlight and 4 index cards. We were so engaged in action, that I forgot to take a photo. We observed light traveling in a straight line through the index cards. The cards had holes in their centres and each card was placed in a straight line 10cm apart - we shined the flashlight at the centre hole and observed where the beam went. The light beam was made more visible when we misted the cards with water... we could actually see the light beam shinning in a straight line!!!

Immediately following the experiment, we headed outside. I asked the students to dance, run and have fun with their shadows!!! After several minutes of play, we discussed our shadows.

Where do shadows come from?

Are they always the same size?

If we stood still, would our shadow move?

Why can't we see our shadows at night or on a really cloudy day?

Does everything have a shadow?

We discovered that our bodies block the sun's light. When we block the light we create a shadow. Depending on where the sun is positioned in the sky, our shadow will move around us.
Often on the weekends, I can be found at Kidsbooks in South Surrey with my own children reading and buying books. When I don't have time, I search on Amazon for the latest, greatest books and am often heading down to Point Roberts to pick up my orders!

A new favourite of mine, is Dude by Christopher Aslan. This book repeats the single word "Dude" on every page but each time it represents a different feeling.

Using the lesson suggestion by Adrienne Gear, in her book Writing Power we read the book and began inferring the character, Dude's feelings. I tweaked the lesson a little and had my students work either alone or in partners to pick a page from the story and write either what they thought the character was thinking or what he might say. They recorded this information on either a speech or thought bubble. Unfortunately I forgot my good camera... so some of these are a little blurry!
Next we played an inferring game, suggested by Gear in her lesson. One student was "it" and this student left the room. Then I gave the remaining students an emotion such as "scared". When the person who was "it" came back into the room, students shared clues about the emotion. Each student started by saying "I felt this time once when...." and described what they may have been thinking or doing. The "it" person had to guess the emotion that was being inferred.Jennifer Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15919502616088044112noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301389422441633949.post-32362204425684200422012-04-19T12:07:00.001-07:002012-04-19T20:32:16.857-07:00Understanding MultiplicationMultiplication is a concept the students in my class have been eager to learn. In September, they proudly told me that they knew some of their multiplication facts and wondered when we were going to learn more. Throughout the year, I taught a few games that modelled the concepts of multiplication.

Yesterday the class heard two great books below...

Next the students worked with one of their clock partners (pairs) and did a carousel brainstorm. Each set of partners was asked to think about items that come in specific numbers (constants of count). Some examples include: human eyes which come in twos, wheels on a tricycles come in threes, sides on a square come in fours, and so on. The partners rotated around the classroom 12 times and were asked to add their ideas to t-shirts numbered 1 - 12. This idea came from one of Kim Sutton's excellent resource books titled, All Aboard The Algebra Express. This lesson is our pre-cursor to understanding that multiplication can be thought of as repeated addition or groups of equal numbered items.

Today we continued to explore the constants of counts but moved to T charts to examine these relationships. I was pleased that some of the students instantly recognized patterns and used their knowledge of patterns to fill in the data.
Some students without being taught, determined the multiplier of "n" in the function and another child recognized that "n" = n + n There mathematical thinking never ceases to amaze me!
One of the many joys of teaching, is the appreciation that your students show you through a high five, smile, hug, enthusiasm, and so on! Lately I have had some girls in the class make me little bouquets each day at recess. They are so sweet and creative! I love my little flowers!Jennifer Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15919502616088044112noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6301389422441633949.post-34949678983341710742012-04-13T11:00:00.001-07:002012-04-13T11:08:23.898-07:00Seeing the light!Yesterday our class had Micron Mark, a scientist from High Tech High Touch, Science Made Fun visit our class. Together we explored and participated in experiments about light... which we learned that scientist call Optics!
Next, we took our eggs outside and played with the strength of an oval. I instructed the students to use one hand only, and squeeze the egg as hard as they could ~ but they had to apply equal pressure all around (example: don't just press hard with your thumb). The students were shocked that they could not break the eggs, as we all know eggshells are pretty fragile little things. But when you squeeze an egg in your hand (all rings must be off), its' strength is amazing. The strength of an egg lies in its shape. If you took a sharp object to the side of an egg, it puts pressure on the thin shell and easily breaks it. But squeezing it directs pressure into the egg, so that it compresses along, not across the shell.

In our structures unit last term, we learned that architects and engineers have used smooth curves, known as arches, to support the weight of structures for centuries. An arch directs pressure so that it compresses (squeezes) the building material. An egg is really and amazing piece of natural engineering.
We ended the day, celebrating Easter with jellybeans. I decided to let the students demonstrate their understanding of a "fair share" or "fractions of a group". I gave each small group a handful of jellybeans and asked them to figure out how to share them equally amongst each other. When the task was completed we discussed how the lesson was related to both fractions and division. Math with food is always full of enthusiasm!
Last week I read Pat Hutchins book The Doorbell Rang to my class. The students enjoyed figuring out the mental math in their heads. It is a story about a mother who makes twelve cookies and asks her children to share them fairly. After figuring out how many each child will get, the doorbells rings and more kiddies arrive. As the number of children grows, the students need to re-think how the cookies can be distributed fairly. The pattern continues throughout the book until their are 12 kids and 12 cookies and then the doorbell rings... and it is Granny bringing more cookies.

Then I taught another wonderful lesson from Marilyn Burns... (although the worksheets were self created). I explained to the students that they were going to need to work cooperatively in groups to share paper cookies. We talked about what cooperation looks like and sounds like. I had 4 groups of four students and 1 group of six students.

Once the students solved the problem of sharing a specific number of cookies, they brought me their evidence (the worksheet with cut up cookies shared equally) and I would assign them a new challenge to share a different number of cookies.

In the second block of the lesson we met back together as a class and the students shared their answers. What was wonderful was the connection the students made to equivalent fractions. Through looking at the multiple ways the students divided up the cookies we could see visually and symbolically equivalent fractions!
